diy reaches maturity

i looked at this featured article How not to block cameras on instructables the other day and thought to myself: i might be witnessing the next step in the culture of diy. the fact is that this is a damned good review of the sensational project that shot across the net a few weeks ago.

what does it mean when the diy network users start really doing verification, peer review, and analysis? this is an amazing move forward when we can take back the property ceded to the cults of specialization (chew on that Keen!).

Randofo's parting shot: step 5Lastly... By all means, feel free to prove my test wrong with replicable results.

Bravo!

i think the caption in this lolcat style picture sums up his challenge to us:

maybe i should start this post with that lame line such as: "wow it has been so long..." i will divert from that right now.

i have started working on my antenna painting project in a very real way today. i spent the last few weeks trying to find a good way to render the dragon curve (or any recursive folding system) in a vector like form so i can scale the lengths of the arms to the right wavelength(λ).

i found a nice script written in PostScript that renders the fractal beautifully posted on Dr. Charpentier's page about L-Systems. Gratefully this made my life very easy for the transfer to the image surface. i would like to improve on this so the curve never rolls on itself in the line. Guess i will need to learn some PostScript.

i decided to try to match channel 6 wavelength . This is of course the most overused channel partly because it is default. The λ of channel 6 will also allow me be sloppy as i am truly hand drawing this antenna; thus, a quarter millimeter here or there will not sink the ship.

the unvieling of fontanaBot

6june2008: day 1020 of my graduate career and day 4 of Zer01 Festival 2008.

the public seemed delighted by the knife wielding robot known as fontanaBot. throngs of visitors crowded 1st street tonight and to my eye the numbers are here-to-fore unprecedented for the South Bay First Fridays. the event was ramped up for SubZero, an exposition of projects in honor of Zer01 2008. nearly 50 participants exhibited hacks, hardware, interactivity, and all-around art. here's a teaser video from us:

the hearing loss i am feeling this morning induced by the nieghboring project Drone Machines by Tristan Shone(which btw is an amazing project!) is a small price to pay for the downright success of fontanaBot's first public outing. the machinic artist executed dozens of works over 6 hours and evoked all the responses that one would expect from disbelief to amusement and back to disgust again, a little controversy is always good , no? read more at www.thomasasmuth.com

much to my amusement i learned that the other robotic art exhibition at SubZero was a project by my neighbor in Oakland three units down! the Boise Cascade has become a hotbed of hardware art.

sitting next to ethan in the lab and watching our body communication with the screen. faintly, i can hear: "I can't do that Dave."

algorithmic sculpture update

my research continues, i was unhappy with the results of the ribbon of plexi so I replaced it with acrylic rod which is much more line like. I am applying L-System Rules to the acrylic rod and allowing the aesthetics of math to take shape.

This video shows a simple set of instructions: 1 unit forward, two units 90 degrees down, 1 unit at 0 degrees pitch and 270 degrees yaw.

This video shows the partially rendered 6 iterations of L-System formula: FX, where X is X+YF+> and Y is >>-FX-Y

3 Fundred Million

There are many things that were amazing about CAA 2008 but, I feel I need to report on an important project I learned about from Mel Chin and spearheaded locally from Mary Rubin called the Fundred Project.

At this point Mel asked me to swear you to secrecy. Please only pass this info to the most sane individuals you know. ;) This project is so amazing I volunteered to participate.

Fundred is an artist intervention to remove the lead out of the soil in several communities in New Orleans. As you might know lead poisoning has been linked to cognitive disabilities but it is also linked to crime and violence. This poisoning hits the children the hardest because they exposed to more of it for their size and weight.

Mel has concieved of a project to collect the 300 Million that it would take to clean this up from student artists drawing their own Fundred Dollar bills. An armored car converted to burn vegetable oil will travel the US collecting the 3 Fundred Million and deliver it to Washington to 'pay' for the clean up.

L-system software to plan sculpture

i have been using LSystem by jon klein for my research for fractal designs for antenna design. i am new to the Lindenmayer system which for un-initiated is grammatical system for handling fractal mathematical algorithms.

Poetry recital for a special machine.

Our first assignment in HMI. Naturally I composed about Wardriving, Antennae, and Wifi. Naturally, I used a javascript to compose the poetry. A few of the better Sonnents on Wifi:

1.Enter the red username.
CALMLY login THE password.
WHY DOES THE wifi blink?
NEVER PUSH A network.
WEPS run LIKE RAINY passwordS.

2.ALL pingS broadcast wireless, unsecure userS.
yellow, MISTY loginS LOUDLY reset A NOISY, wireless browser.

3.MetroWifi IS A blinking ISP.
WHY DOES THE 'Net blink?
account blink!
LIKE so many tears on a wireless card.

yeah i did clean it up a bit. :D You can find the applet on this page. Thanks to Keith Enevoldsen's Think Zone

my data & my rights to privacy

just the other day i was lamenting to a professor about my really poor memory now that i have organized it to be external. my laptop has become an indispensable file cabinet of facts, figures, and perhaps very importantly research of contemporary artists. the topic arose when i was trying to recall the name of a dutch designer whose work i particularly like. i know many people who are in the same boat.

by sheer synchronicity one of my regular radio shows, On the Media had an amazing segment on the privacy litigation going on about our externalized memories on hard drives. the cases and judgments were very astonishing and defied categorization. how much privacy are you legally entitled to...

you know you are in the pacific northwest when it rains coffee

rainincoffee01.JPG voodoodonut02.JPG

the travel was a little tedious but i simply love portland, how can you help but love a town where the greek restaurant installs an octopus with santa hat inflatable. or the town that has a punk rock donut shop which serves a donut the size of dinner plate, we highly recommend the 'old dirty bastard' which is covered in oreos and peanut butter and the 'doll' with raspberry filling. we surprised Owen hope to see him tonight and we will be hitting the first thursdays gallery crawl tonight with Palmarin.
